About the Artist
Esayas is a visionary scratchboard artist, graphic designer, and photographer whose work
transcends borders and cultures. Originally from East Africa, he now calls Brownsburg,
Indiana, home, where he lives with his wife and three sons. A self-taught artist from a young
age, Esayas honed his skills with pencils long before discovering his true passion for
scratchboard art—a medium that would become the cornerstone of his artistic career.

In 2014, while studying at El Camino College in Torrance, California, Esayas encountered the transformative guidance of Professor Richard Ewing, a renowned illustration instructor. Under
Ewing’s mentorship, Esayas immersed himself in the world of scratchboard art, a medium celebrated for its extraordinary detail and precision. Captivated by its potential, he began to master the intricate techniques required to bring his subjects to life with stunning realism and emotional depth.
Today, Esayas specializes in creating breathtakingly detailed portraits of humans and animals, each piece a testament to his ability to capture the essence, character, and soul of his subjects. His work is a harmonious blend of technical mastery and artistic intuition, revealing the beauty and complexity of the natural world through the unique lens of scratchboard.
Since relocating to Indiana in 2021, Esayas has found a supportive community that nurtures his creative freedom and allows his talents to flourish. His art is not only a reflection of his dedication and skill but also a celebration of the rich cultural and personal experiences that shape his perspective. Through his work, Esayas invites viewers to see the world through his eyes—one intricate scratch at a time.
